The Word Lab

Terms of Service

Last updated: 3 September 2026

1. About these terms

The Word Lab (“the app”) is a free educational spelling-practice tool operated by Jacob Richter and published at thewordlab.app. By using the app you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

2. What the app is

The app lets teachers create spelling word lists and lets students practise building those words. It is provided free of charge for educational use.

3. Acceptable use

You agree to use the app only for lawful, educational purposes. You must not:

  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to the app, its server, or other users' lists or classes;
  • interfere with, disrupt, or attack the service;
  • upload unlawful, harmful, or infringing content; or
  • use the app to store personal information about students (for example, do not use a student's real name as a list or class name).

4. Teachers' responsibilities

  • Keep your teacher PIN and private edit links confidential; anyone with an edit link can view and change that list or class.
  • Keep the paper record matching each animal code to a student secure and separate from the app.
  • Obtain any parental notice or consent your school or the Department of Education requires before using the app with students, and supervise students' use.

5. Content and ownership

Word lists, class names, settings, and voice recordings you create remain yours; you are responsible for having the right to use any content you add. The app's software, design, and branding remain the property of the operator.

6. Availability

The app is self-hosted and provided “as is” and “as available”. We may change, suspend, or discontinue it, and cannot guarantee it will always be available or error-free.

7. Disclaimer and liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the app is provided without warranties of any kind, and the operator is not liable for any loss or damage arising from its use. Nothing in these terms excludes rights or guarantees you may have under the Australian Consumer Law or other laws that cannot be excluded.

8. Privacy

Your use is also covered by our Privacy Policy, which explains what limited information the app handles.

9. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms; the “last updated” date will change. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia.
